Welcome Message
As former Chair of the 6th Asia-Pacific Mediation Forum Conference Steering Committee and member of the University Organizing Committee, I would like to extend my gratitude and thanks to all participants and delegates to this 6th Asia-Pacific Mediation Forum Summit and wish all a warm welcome to the Philippines and De La Salle University.
The Summit’s theme, “Mediation in a Globalizing World: Challenges to Multiculturalism, Peace-building and Religious Tolerance,” offers a multitude of opportunities for us to discuss, deliberate, and examine significant and critical issues, concerns, and questions that face people and states of the world in resolving multifarious types of conflicts and disputes in a peaceful and creative means. Apart from addressing social, economic, cultural and political discords in a globalizing world, an equally paramount concern of the summit is the strengthening and institutionalization of peace efforts. Peace consolidation in the aftermath of conflict is enormous. We have witnessed the recurrence of violence in countries after peace has been experienced in a relatively short period of time. This is a clarion call for all of us to do more to build and consolidate peace, as well as activate our preventive capacities to ensure that conflicts are averted in the first place. Indeed our vision of a peaceful world has to be coupled with action as futurist Joel Barker says, “Vision without action is merely a dream. Action without vision just passes the time. Vision with action can change the world.”
As academics, practitioners, analysts and policy makers of the world, I enjoin you to contribute not only in the better understanding of the world we have today but also take action how the world could be a better place for the coming generations. Again, I expressed my heartfelt thanks for your participation in this Summit and convey my warm welcome to this international forum of minds and hearts. May you have a fruitful Summit and pleasant stay in the Philippines and at De La Salle University.
